Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.
Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.
Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.
As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.
We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.
Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, and The Netherlands.
About the Role:
The Verification and Validation Test Team is responsible for creating and maintaining the end-to-end tests and infrastructure for our new satellite development programs. Test Engineers on our team tackle projects to design and build integrated software and hardware platforms that allow us to validate our spacecraft performance and verify our requirements. As a member of the Verification and Validation Test Team, you will collaborate with design and software engineers to develop everything from board-level tests to fully integrated HIL setups that enable the demonstration of spacecraft performance and operation.
As a Systems Test Automation Engineer you will develop the software and test scripts that interact with the satellite from different environments including the ground station and debug ports. You will be hands-on in the lab getting the first integration of hardware and software together functioning and validating the design and performance. You will also be responsible for developing dashboards for real-time data visualization, test data storage, and post-processing of test data.
Impact You’ll Own:
Develop scripts and programs that allow the execution of a wide-array of tests on the spacecraft
Design and implement GUIs, command-line interfaces, and other interfaces to allow users to interact with the integrated “flatsats”
Integrate the newly developed tests on the next generation of satellites into the existing test infrastructure and help transition from development to production
Adapt and modify flight code to allow for the integration of various test systems and scenarios into our HIL test beds
Improve processes such as software deployments, continuous integration, testing, planning, documentation, etc.
Write scripts to test the hardware and software against requirements and map requirements into test campaigns on the various integrated test beds
Hold regular meetings with stakeholders to understand and their needs
What You Bring:
Minimum of 3 years of professional experience developing software applications and automating tests
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or other relevant field
Proven history of identifying a customer’s needs and delivering a solution in a timely manner
The ability to plan a project by identifying dependencies, breaking the work into pieces, and collaborating with teammates to complete the project
Experience with unit testing, continuous integration, and documentation
Knowledge of fundamental software engineering principles and design patterns, and knowing how and when to use them
A fearless attitude: unafraid to experiment with new solutions and tackle difficult problems
Programming experience in both Python and C/C++
Strong Linux fundamentals
Experience with DVCS such as git or mercurial
Experience with code reviews, pair programming, and group design sessions
What Makes You Stand Out:
Experience automating hardware, or working with other complex interconnected systems
