🔭 Our mission & vision

Job Description

Oh, hi there!

We’re so pumped you’re considering this special opportunity to join our team.

It’s that time of year again where the world slows down and reflects on the year that was. Our team will be taking a collective breather throughout December and early January, and will be back to our usual antics from mid January.

Until we’re back to business as usual, we encourage you to take some extra time to polish your resume and cover letter, and put some additional TLC into your application responses.

We know that pressing send can be a little nerve wracking, so here’s a little motivation from our amazing Co-Founder and VP of Strategy & Growth - Jehan.

Our Talent Team look forward to jumping back in next year to review all of your thoughtful applications in the new year with as much delight as opening a fresh box of Who Gives A Crap toilet paper. Best of luck in your application!

Not all heroes wear capes — but plenty of them use toilet paper

Funny name, serious business

We make eco-friendly products and donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets for the billions of people who lack proper access. So far, we’ve contributed over $10 million AUD (roughly $7.4 million USD) to fund sanitation projects around the globe. Basically, we’re really good at doing good.

With hubs in Australia, the Philippines, China, the US, UK, and Europe, our ambitious team of 200+ work together to make the biggest possible impact for people and the planet. Over the next couple of years, we’re working to increase our annual donation tenfold and we won’t rest until everyone in the world has access to clean water and sanitation services.

A bit about the role

We’re bringing our engineering team in-house, and you can help us write this story! As our Sr. Front End Engineer (AU) you’ll be reporting into our hub Engineering Manager and working elbow-to-elbow with a talented team of developers, designers, and strategists to build an innovative and totally delightful ecommerce experience. You’ll help contribute to and migrate our front-end architecture to a modern and performance oriented edge-first framework, and collaborate with our design team to create and evangelise a new multi-brand design system. Our growing team of Front End Engineers will lean on your experience, mentorship, and guidance towards healthy and pragmatic code quality and delivery practices.

While we’re hiring this role for our Melbourne hub, we still want to hear from you if you’re located in other parts of Australia, US, UK, China, Hong Kong, or the Philippines and up for dedicating yourself to the AEDT timezone from afar. Our Digital Product team spans across Australia and the US, and works remote-first (we have global co-working spaces in LA, NY, Melbourne, Sydney, and London that you are welcome to use, and also offer a stipend for hot desks and a slick WFH setup). And while we’re not totally immune to the effects of time zones challenging how we come together, we’ve done plenty of testing on our ways of working and currently have our Digital Product team committing up to 4 hours per day of collaboration time which sees our US team aligning to PST afternoons and our Australian team diving into earlier mornings. We also believe in Slow (no-meetings) Mondays for our Australian team, which our US team enthusiastically celebrates on their respective Fridays.

If you worked here this past month here are some things you might have been involved in:

You’ve shared your brain to the Head of Digital Product and Digital Product Directors and provided your strategic input towards our technology roadmap, helped create an architectural framework, and kept the data flowing so our cross-functional teams, communications, and work is super transparent (bonus points: tech is never considered a mystery)

You’ve danced your way through weekly sprint ceremonies and kept a strong pulse on priorities, projects, productivity and throughput

Shared a heartwarming, values and gif-filled Slack message celebrating your AU Engineering team in our company-wide #kudos channel celebrating all their big wins and soaked up all the warm fuzzies

Lent your technical chops to evolve our approach to automated testing that proactively caught issues and bugs, saving our users and feedback loop any friction and headaches (whew!)

Worked with our design team to propose a scalable design token naming convention to meet the needs of our multi-brand design system

Collaborated with our primary vendor Shopify to navigate a meaty subscription API version migration

From your strategic technical lens, you’ve informed the team of issues with our Vanilla Extract CSS library, and put your “scrappy” cap on to create prototypes that demonstrate a superior developer experience.

You’ve helped develop a secret “easter egg” hidden in the site that is so amusing and surprising that it goes viral on technology blogs and forums you’ve crushed on for years.

Led an initiative to simplify our data layer, significantly reducing the amount of code involved

Shared your thoughts and ideas to our company-wide DE&I, Work From Home, Customer Insights and CultureAmp surveys to make sure we are supporting you, your team and future teammates with a world-class culture experience

Who you are

🥞 You eat lots of front end and even gander some fullstack for breakfast

Mmmm, stacks. You know the latest in front end frameworks and know how to decide what cloud services we should be using to host and to scale our experience. You definitely have strong experience with one or more ecommerce platforms (ideally Shopify but let’s still talk if it’s Magento or something else), and you understand and can assess the trade-offs of custom vs. out of the box approaches.

🤠 You look good in all the hats

You love to think strategically whilst being tactical. You really love code but you’ve also got an eye for good design. You obsess over delightful UX but you’re comfortable being scrappy. You speak developer-ese and designer-ese fluently. You get the gist.

🫶 You <3 users

Whether it’s evaluating feature requests, keeping a dozen steps ahead on roadmap items, or dreaming up new initiatives, you are always keeping the end user at heart in all that your team does. You have an incredible intuition for anticipating customer issues and you’re always looking for ways to reduce friction for internal and external users. But you don’t settle for “good”, you’re always on the lookout for places to hide truly delightful content or functionality.

🤝 You are an expert collaborator

Your work touches every part of the business - both within and beyond! - and you are highly collaborative across all teams, hubs, and levels of Who Gives A Crap. You encourage open communication and advocate for shared positive outcomes. People trust you and you’re able to build a reputation as an expert as well as a teammate. You’re able to clearly define a value proposition and seamlessly articulate it, generating support and buy-in from both key stakeholders and team members.

🧻 You’re a natural roll model (pun intended)

You care deeply about the people you work with, and it shows in your contribution. Titles aside, you’re known to lead by example and promote an environment of experimentation and a thirst for learning. You’re continually levelling yourself and your team up by harnessing excellent habits, keeping communication and inspiration flowing, going after goals big and small, supporting each other, holding each other accountable, and celebrating the wins together.

💩You give a crap

Yep. We’re all here because we genuinely want to make the world a better place with our work, and we want you to want that too! Awwww.

Our process

Our interview process takes roughly 2-3 weeks and is entirely virtual, with an estimated 8.5 hours of your time interviewing and paid project work.

Application (allow for 1-2 weeks response time)

Zoom Hiring Manager Interview w/ our AU Engineering Manager (1 hour)

Zoom Interview w/ a member of our P+C team (30 mins) and a Take-home Paid technical coding test (estimated up to 4 hours over 1 week)

Final Steps: 3 Iterative Zoom Meetings w/ our (1) AU Dev team, (2) larger Digital Product team, and (3) Head of Digital Product (3 hours totally ideally over same day)

Verbal Offer w/ AU Engineering Manager + Rearview w/ Executive Leadership (30 mins each)

Why should you work with us?

First off, there’s the feel good stuff. As a certified B Corp™, we work to make a difference every day while maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental impact. We also believe that helping to make the world a better place shouldn’t have to mean getting paid peanuts — it’s why we offer super competitive salaries, benefits like tailored learning and development opportunities, generous paid parental leave and free toilet paper (yes, you read that right).

But you don’t have to take our word for it — our employees recently gave us our sixth consecutive Culture Amp engagement score of 90+ and we’ve been named one of BuiltInLA’s “100 Best Places to Work” two years in a row.

Have you made it this far?

If you’re still reading, we think there’s a strong chance you might be our kind of person.

Here’s the thing, though — research suggests that 60% of women and underrepresented folks might have already talked themselves out of applying. Even if you don’t check every box above, we want to encourage you to introduce yourself. We believe a diversity of perspectives and experiences makes a team stronger — and the stronger our team, the closer we are to delivering toilets and clean water for all.
