About the Role:
The Mechanical Engineering team at Planet is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to help drive the design of key spacecraft subsystems across Planet’s fleet of Earth-imaging satellites. Your mission will be to champion our spacecraft design and testing efforts. The ideal candidate will be a Mechanical Engineering student with a passion for space and experience designing components. As a member of the Mechanical Engineering team within Planet’s Space Systems division, you will be a key contributor and stakeholder in Planet’s agile aerospace approach to spacecraft design, and will work closely with senior mechanical engineers, structural analysis, thermal engineering, and reliability & qualification, as well as the rest of Planet’s leading-edge spacecraft design and manufacturing teams.
This position is a part of our twelve week summer internship program that starts on Monday, June 12th 2023 and concludes on September 1st, 2023.
Impact You’ll Own:
Provide support to design, engineering, prototyping, production, and validation activities for various programs at Planet
Develop and execute engineering and production tests to drive mechanical design and manufacturing process improvements
Design and build test fixtures to support various space hardware programs
Document and present work to multi-disciplinary collaborators and leadership
What You Bring:
Experience with Solidworks, geometric tolerancing, design for manufacture (DFM), Raspberry Pi/Arduino, prototyping (machine shop, 3d printing, etc.)
Analytical/problem solving skills and ability to use statistical tools and techniques
Organization, planning, communication, and time management skills
Interest in working on high-reliability, space qualified hardware
Pursuing a BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or similar
What Makes You Stand Out:
Working toward Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering or science degree
Project history where you designed, built, and tested an idea
Enthusiasm for Space
Proficiency in Python, Matlab, Visual Basic, and/or C

The US hourly rate range for this position at the commencement of employment is $35 - $40. The final salary range is determined by job related experience, skills and location. The range displays our typical hiring range for new hire salaries in US locations only.
